The Sacred Heart Still Teaches
A Deep Respect for Intellectual Values

The first window invited us to reach.
The second window invites us to seek.
The hand that reached for mercy now becomes
the mind and heart willing to walk,
to question,
to listen,
to follow the light as understanding begins to open.
Sometimes truth does not arrive all at once.
Sometimes it comes as a question.
A page opened.
A word heard differently than before.
A small beam of light passing through glass,
revealing colors that were always there,
waiting to be seen.
A road taken.
There is another Road.
There are two who know what it is to carry questions.
They had believed.
They had hoped.
And now the pieces of what they thought they understood
no longer seem to fit together.
One is named.
The other is not.
And because one name is left unspoken,
the road feels strangely open to us.
Could it be you?
Could it be me?
Could we walk with them,
carrying our own questions,
our disappointments,
the pieces of what we thought we understood?
The road continues.
And a Stranger comes near.
He asks what they have been discussing.
They speak of Him to Him,
and yet they do not recognize Him.
He begins with the Scriptures.
An open book on an open road.
He gathers the words they have known
and shows them what they had not yet seen.
A promise remembered.
A suffering seen differently.
A story they thought had ended,
widening before them.
And here, within the second window,
the open book waits again—
held now in glass,
beside a compass still searching,
stars beyond what the eye can hold,
and a prism waiting quietly for light.
The prism does not create the colors hidden within the light.
It reveals them.
Perhaps that is what truth sometimes does within us.
It does not always give us a different life,
a different story,
or a different road.
Sometimes it allows us to see more deeply
what was already there.
Perhaps your questions are like that, too.
Not empty.
Not faithless.
Not something to hide.
Perhaps they are places where light is waiting to enter.
A question you have carried for years.
A truth you have heard many times
but have never fully entered.
A place where faith and experience
do not yet seem to meet.
Perhaps this is your mind before God.
Not empty.
Not faithless.
Still open.
Still learning how to receive light.
A question does not always lead us away from faith.
Sometimes it is the place where faith asks to go deeper.
To read again.
To listen beneath the words.
To loosen our hold upon the answer we expected.
To leave room for what may still be revealed.
To receive the wisdom carried faithfully through generations.
To allow the mystery of Divine Presence
to question you as deeply as you question it.
Perhaps this is what it means
to hold a deep respect for intellectual values—
to honor the hunger for truth
placed within you.
To seek without pride.
To learn without losing wonder.
To listen beyond the first answer.
To remain humble before all
that you have not yet seen.
Look again.
The book remains open.
The compass continues to turn.
The stars keep their holy distance.
The prism waits for light.
None of them asks you to know everything.
They ask only that you remain willing to look again.
Perhaps a deep respect for intellectual values
begins with fear.
Fear of the Lord.
Not terror,
but reverence.
Wonder before creation.
Awe before the Word.
Humility before wisdom
carried through centuries.
A quiet astonishment
that God may be nearer than we know.
The Sacred Heart does not ask you
to choose between mind and heart.
He gathers both.
The mind seeks.
The heart listens.
And grace makes them whole.
Evening comes.
From somewhere within the searching,
a prayer rises:
“Stay with us.”
Stay within the question.
Stay when understanding has not yet come.
Stay when the light grows thin.
At the table—
Bread broken.
Thanks given.
Eyes opened.
Recognition comes.
“Were not our hearts burning within us?”
—Luke 24:32
Perhaps this is where our own search for truth leads—
not toward an answer we can possess,
but toward a Presence we can recognize.
Not toward the end of mystery,
but toward a deeper seeing.
Our book remains open.
Our compass still turns.
Our eyes lift toward the stars.
Our prism waits for light.
And perhaps so do we.
A deep respect for intellectual values may be lived here—
in the mind willing to ask,
the heart willing to listen,
the humility to look again,
and the courage to remain open.
We do not have to silence mystery
in order to love truth.
We do not have to know everything
in order to keep seeking.
We remain students.
Seekers.
Hearts and minds still being gathered into wholeness.
There is always more truth to love.
More light to receive.
More waiting to be known.
Perhaps we were never meant to graduate from wonder.
The Window’s Invitation
Before you leave this window,
notice one question you are carrying.
Not one you must answer today.
Only one you are willing to hold before God.
Bring your hands together gently,
like the covers of a closed book.
Then slowly open them,
palms lifted.
Let the open hands become your prayer.
Where might God be inviting you
to look again?
Sacred Heart of Jesus,
keep me teachable.
